If you would like to make your own jams and jellies, why buy fruit from the grocery store when we live a short drive from many family-run orchards and fruit farms? The following is a short list of where you can find local fruit, and when it is available. This information is provided as a courtesy and is not meant as an endorsement. This list does not differentiate between You-Pick and Ready Picked. Check with the farm regarding their policy, as well as the hours of operation. If you’re going to pick your own, it’s wise to arrive early in the morning. Besides being cooler, the patch will get picked over by late in the day and the farmer will close it. Always call ahead! And always bring cash as some of these farms do not take credit cards.
Unless noted, the fruit and berries are conventionally grown, not organic.
Season of availability, depending on the weather:
- Strawberries-Typically the first week of June, into the beginning of July. They are very fragile and can be wiped out by heat or cool weather.
- Cherries-Sweet or sour varieties. Mid-June to mid-July
- Currants-Red or black. Late June-early July. Short two-week season
- Red raspberries-Late June, early July. There is usually an autumn crop also, late September.
- Blueberries-Early July to mid-August
- Blackberries-Early August-early September
- Apricots-mid-July. Hard to find.
- Peaches-August into September. Each grower will usually grow several different varieties which ripen at staggered times. The earlier varieties are cling peaches, not free stone, but they all taste great.

- If you’re taking a road trip, do take a detour on SR. 53 on Catawba Island. There are a couple roadside stands including Quinstock Farms. She is a small organic farmer who grows apricots and peaches, as well as vegetables. The family also owns and operates Twin Oast Brewing Company, which is right behind the orchard stand. The other Catawba Island stands don’t have websites, but if something is in season, it should be available there.
Many of the growers that have fruit stands will sell produce from other growers. For example, Krieg’s will sell peaches grown nearby. Many also sell locally grown vegetables. One of the best things about these farms and orchards is that many of them are close to each other, plus you may discover a new stand while you’re out looking
